Release Notes Milestone 312 Firmware 2.03, January 23th 2009. How to upgrade. Milestone 312 needs the file „Milestone.SW“ in the root directory of an SD card, as well as „M312.FAST“ and „M_START.WAV“. It will then upgrade the software automatically upon USB disconnection or insertion of that SD card and restart. Then, remove and re-insert the SD card once to install the other two files in addition. A possible way to do this is, step-by-step: Connect Milestone 312 to a PC. Make sure in its slot is an SD card. It will appear as additional drive on the PC. Copy „Milestone.SW“, „M312.FAST“ and „M_START.WAV“ to the SD card. Make sure it‘s the SD card and not the internal memory. Disconnect Milestone 312. It will start upgradeing the software and reboot. After rebooting, remove SD card and put it back in. Now the other two files „M312.FAST“ and „M_START.WAV“ are installed, accompanied by audible prompts. Changeings since 1.50 from 15th December 2008: 1 Fast key reaction. Reaction to subsequent key presses now leads to cutting of currently played message and immediate advancement to the next one. This shortens the navigation time significantly. 2 USB SD card speed. The USB transmission speed to SD card has been significantly increased. Write speed of 6 Megabytes and read speed of 12 Megabytes per seconds can be achieved with a class 6 SD card. 3 SD card size. The SD card driver has been enhanced to support all cards known to us (SD, SDHC, MMC), up to 32 Gigabytes. Tested were Windows XP, Windows Vista and Mac OS X. 4 Speaker volume. The speaker volume is increased now. 5 Voice records. Voice records record in higher volume and are frequency filtered to avoid low frequency distortions that are typically found when recording inside cars. 6 Pathnames with special characters. Paths with special characters, such as Umlaut, did partially not work. This is corrected. 7 Daisy: Changeing header levels. When navigating through header levels while listeining to a Daisy book, reading position partially jumped back a few phrases. This is corrected. 8 Keyboard reaction in play mode. Rarely, the keyboard could get stuck that only Mode button could release it. This is corrected. 9 Power consumption. Power consumption is reduced; the playback time is 20% longer by now. 10 Mono output to speaker. Stereo files are played in mono through speaker now. Previously, it was the left channel only. 11 File dates of index files. Data files such as FOLDER.NAM, RESUME.FOL and CONFIG MILESTONE.TXT now hold the system time as creation time now. 12 Filenames starting with blanks. Previously file names starting with a blank character could not be played back. This is corrected. Although Windows does not allow to create such files, they can be produced with tricks or some automatic generators, e.g., streaming recording engines, might create them. 13 Remote upgradeing. Remore upgrading to additional features via email files is possible now. It is protected by the serial number of the device. 14 Volume setting during phrase change. Changeing volume during a phrase change in Daisy books stopped the player. Now it continues to play. 15 Daisy header levels. At some books, not all header levels were detected. This is corrected. 16 Startup beep. The startup beep is now configurable to any audio file. As example, see M_START.WAV. A file with such a name on the SD card root directory will be become the startup sound. The WAV file must be stereo, 32 or 44.1 kHz sampling rate and not longer than 0.5 Megabytes. Bones Inc. does provide a selection of sounds on its web page. 17 Text file playing. Switching from one text file to another played back some buffered content from the previous file. This is corrected. 18 Battery levels. The boundary between „Please charge battery“ and „Charge battery urgently“ has been moved, as these two messages followed each other too quickly. Now, „please charge battery“ comes in earlier and stays longer. 19 Clock precision The clock has been improved to much better precision. 20 Audio prompts. The audio prompts (beeps) are played at less volume over headphone now, if volume is higher than 75%. 21 Radio frequency entering. Entering radio frequencies by keyboard now starts at 80MHz, not at 90MHz, since this had confused some users. 22 Volume beep. When reaching maximum or minimum volume, a tiny beep is played back.
